Reminded me a little of the even scarier Richard Preston article for The New Yorker, "The Hot Zone" (later a book and Dustin Hoffmann movie).
One episode of AMC's "The Walking Dead" depicted a CDC researcher projecting a time-lapse MRI of the brain of a person who became zombified. The process looked a great deal like what this article describes, although in the show, virus transmission was through physical contact and not airborne.
